Trail through the Black Rakoš Valley to the Przełęcz pod Kopą and the Szeroka Przełęcz Bielska

Starting in the picturesque Tatrzańska Kotlina, we embark on a trail that takes us through some of the most beautiful and contrasting corners of the Biele Tatry (Bielskie Tatras). Along the way, we will encounter gentle, grassy slopes as well as steep, rocky peaks – an ideal combination for anyone who loves mountain hiking!

The trail through the Black Rakoš Valley is a perfect choice for tourists seeking a challenge without venturing into advanced-level trekking. While more demanding than the popular valleys, it remains accessible for those in good physical condition. The route is long, so preparation and strategy are key, but the rewards are worth it, offering unforgettable views and a sense of immersion in nature in one of the most wild and remote areas of the Tatra Mountains.

  • Physical condition: A good level of fitness is required, as the trail is quite long, with some steep sections.
  • Footwear: Solid, waterproof hiking boots are recommended for the rocky and often uneven terrain.
  • Clothing: Dress in layers, as the weather can change rapidly in the higher elevations. It can be cooler and windier at the peaks.
  • Supplies: Carry enough water and high-energy snacks to keep you fueled throughout the day.
  • Equipment: Although the trail does not require specialized equipment, it is helpful to bring a map or a navigation app to stay on track.

Trail Overview

1. Start in Tatrzańska Kotlina
We begin at the road junction in Tatrzańska Kotlina. Soon, we enter a forested area, and the trail gradually ascends through gentle slopes. For some, this will be a relaxing start, while others may see it as a prelude to the more challenging sections ahead.

2. Chata Plesnivec (Schronisko pod Szarotką)
After about 1.5 hours of walking, we reach Chata Plesnivec (Schronisko pod Szarotką) at 1290 m a.s.l. – a perfect spot for a break and the first chance to admire the view. Here, we can take in the limestone slopes of Bujaczy Wierch and catch glimpses of the Kieżmarski Peak in the distance.

3. To the Wielki Biały Staw
The next part of the trail leads through forested terrain before opening up to a landscape of dwarf pine and rocky outcrops, with views of Bujaczy Wierch and Jagnięcy Szczyt. We eventually reach the Wielki Biały Staw (1613 m a.s.l.), the largest lake in the White Staw Valley. This peaceful, pristine spot is a great place to pause and enjoy the solitude of nature.

4. Przełęcz pod Kopą
From Wielki Biały Staw, we begin a steeper climb towards the Wyżnia Przełęcz pod Kopą (Higher Kopské Sedlo). This pass offers excellent views of the valley below and provides a perfect vantage point for the surrounding peaks, including Kieżmarski Szczyt and Łomnica.

5. Szeroka Przełęcz Bielska
After the final push, we reach the Szeroka Przełęcz Bielska (1920 m a.s.l.), where we are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views. From here, we can admire the majestic Tatras – including Kieżmarski Szczyt, Łomnica, and Durny Szczyt – and gaze across the southern part of the range.
