What is the trail like?

You begin your adventure at Chochołowska Polana, where the green trail leads you towards the mountains. The first section is relatively easy – a wide path along the Chochołowski stream. The trail is initially almost flat, but soon it starts to gradually become steeper. After about 45 minutes, when you pass through the Upper Chochołowska Clearing and start climbing upwards, the first beautiful views begin to appear.

After about an hour of hiking upwards, you’ll emerge above the forest, and the view of the Upper Chochołowska Valley will open up. You’ll be surrounded by steep mountain ridges – on one side the Long Upłaz ridge, and on the other, the Red Peak. When you reach the ridge, you’ll have Wołowiec in front of you. At this point, the green trail connects with the blue trail, which continues to the summit.

The final stretch may be a bit more demanding – a steep ascent to Wołowiec along stone steps. But when you reach the summit, you’ll feel a great sense of accomplishment. Wołowiec offers a magnificent panorama – from the Rohatcs to the Trzy Kopy peak, and even the High Tatras in the distance.

Interesting Facts from the Trail:

  • Views: From Wołowiec, there’s a panoramic view of the entire Western Tatras. You’ll not only see the surrounding peaks, but also Chochołowska Valley with Chochołowska Polana below. In the distance, you can also spot the High Tatras.
  • Rohacze: From the summit of Wołowiec, you’ll enjoy an incredible view of the Rohacze, some of the most distinctive peaks in this part of the Tatras.
  • Landscapes: In the upper sections of the trail, you’ll pass through expansive forests of dwarf pine (kosodrzewina), which gradually give way to more rocky and windy terrain typical of higher mountain areas.

What difficulties can you expect on the trail?

While there are no technical difficulties, the trail does involve steep ascents, particularly in the upper parts. The final section is the most challenging – with a rocky path that can be slippery, and the higher altitude making breathing a bit more difficult. Make sure to take regular breaks.

Finishing the Hike:

Once you reach the summit of Wołowiec, take a rest and enjoy the view. If you still have energy, you can continue hiking towards Jarząbczy Peak, or safely descend back to Chochołowska Valley. Either option offers more unforgettable vistas. Return to the Chochołowska Polana mountain hut with a sense of satisfaction for completing this wonderful hike!
