Hiking Giewont – step by step

Dolina Strążyska – Polana Strążyska
The hike begins in Dolina Strążyska, a stunningly beautiful valley. After a short 30-minute walk, you’ll reach Polana Strążyska, where you can rest at the distinctive “Sfinks” boulder. From here, the mighty Giewont massif comes into view, with its peaks visible in the distance.

Siklawica – Polana Strążyska
Don’t miss a stop at Siklawica, a waterfall about 10 minutes from Polana Strążyska. The water drops from a height of around 20 meters, creating a beautiful sight. It’s an excellent place for a short break.

Przełęcz w Grzybowcu and the ascent to Giewont
After about an hour of hiking, you’ll reach Przełęcz w Grzybowcu. From here, the trail begins to steepen, providing breathtaking views of Giewont and the surrounding peaks. As you gain elevation, you’ll have a closer look at the three summits of Giewont: Długi Giewont, Giewont, and Mały Giewont.

Szczerbinka and Przełęcz Siodło
Soon, you’ll come across the “Szczerbinka,” a narrow rocky notch that the trail passes through – one of the most scenic spots on the route. After this, the path leads you to Przełęcz Siodło, where you’ll be treated to wide views of the Tatra High Mountains.

Approaching the summit and chains
The final stretch is where the adventure truly begins: a steep climb towards the Giewont summit. Experienced hikers will find it manageable, but for those not accustomed to rocky scrambles, the chains will offer valuable assistance.

On the summit of Giewont
At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with one of the best views in the region: Zakopane, Sarnią Skała, and the majestic Tatra High Mountains. The iconic iron cross, erected in 1901, stands proudly on the summit and is a pilgrimage site for many. However, be cautious near the edges, as the northern side of the peak is a sheer drop, and there have been tragic accidents here in the past. Additionally, the weather can change rapidly on Giewont, so be prepared for sudden storms.

Descending from Giewont
After reaching the summit, the trail continues to Wyżnia Kondracka Przełęcz and then back towards Grzybowiec. The descent is not difficult but requires caution, especially in wet conditions when the rocks can become slippery.
