Roháče Ridge (Grań Rohaczy)

The Roháče Ridge, often called the Slovakian Orla Perć, is one of the most beautiful yet challenging trails in the Western Tatras. It stretches between the Smutna Pass and the Jamnicka Pass, offering unique views, thrilling passages, and numerous safety measures in the form of chains. The route leads through peaks such as Roháč Ostry (2,088 m), Roháč Płaczliwy (2,126 m), Banówka, and Hruba Kopa.

For whom is this trail?

This trail is ideal for experienced hikers in good physical condition and without a fear of heights. It offers exposed sections that require a steady step and the use of hands during climbing. Due to the demanding terrain and the length of the hike (8-12 hours to complete the entire route in one day), it is recommended for those accustomed to intense hikes. If you value thrills and panoramic views, this challenge will be perfect.

How to start?

The most popular starting points are the Żarska Valley (green trail to Smutna Pass) and Tatliakova Chata in the Roháč Valley. You can also start from the Chochołowska Valley via Grześ and Wołowiec, which allows you to gradually increase the difficulty. The Roháče Ridge begins at Smutna Pass, where the red trail leads through the most beautiful and demanding sections.

How to prepare?

  • Fitness and experience: This is essential – the ridge requires good physical condition and knowledge of mountain terrain.
  • Equipment: Comfortable trekking shoes, climbing gloves, and a lightweight backpack with water, food, and a first aid kit.
  • Weather: Plan the hike for a stable day – storms in the mountains are particularly dangerous.
Planning: Prepare alternative descent routes – for example, to the Jamnicka Valley, if you decide not to complete the entire trail.

Interesting fact: Rohacki Koń

One of the most famous spots on the ridge is Rohacki Koń – a narrow ridge that resembles the difficulty of the Orla Perć in the Polish Tatras. Despite its ominous reputation, crossing this section is exciting and possible for experienced hikers, but caution is recommended.
