From Kościeliska Valley to Ciemniak – A Journey Through Adamica in the Red Peaks
Hello, mountain enthusiasts! Today, I’ll take you on a trail that may not be the most popular, but it has its unique charm and offers a lot of satisfaction. It’s a hike from Kościeliska Valley to Ciemniak, one of the highest peaks in the Red Peaks range. Although the trail can be challenging, the views that await at the summit are definitely worth the effort.
- Clothing and Footwear – Comfortable hiking boots are essential. The trail can be muddy in places, so make sure you wear shoes that will perform well in these conditions. A rain jacket is also a good idea in case the weather changes.
- Food and Water – Bring enough water and something energizing to eat – there aren’t many shelters or places to refill supplies along the trail.
- Map and Navigation – Although the trail is well-marked, it’s always a good idea to bring a map or GPS app, especially if you’re not confident in your ability to navigate the terrain.
- Time Needed – Set aside around 4 hours for the hike. Remember, in the mountains, you should account for rest breaks and time for enjoying the views.
The Trail to Ciemniak – Starting from Kościeliska Valley
Our adventure begins in Kościeliska Valley, right after crossing the first bridge over the Kościeliski Stream. Here, the trail splits – the black trail leads to Przysłop Miętusi, while the red trail (our route) begins. Shortly, we turn right and head into the forest, which will accompany us for quite a stretch.

Through Adamica – The First Challenges
The trail to Ciemniak starts quite steeply, and it can feel exhausting, especially at the beginning. We hike through the forest up the Adamica ridge, tackling increasingly demanding sections. After about an hour, we reach Polana Upłaz, where we can admire the view of Kominiarski Wierch. This is the first moment when our hike begins to show its scenic rewards.

Great Views, The "Piec" Rock, and Giewont
After a brief return to the forest, we emerge into an open area and soon see one of the characteristic points of this trail – a rock formation called Piec. This is when the trail becomes much more visually attractive, and in the distance, we see the majestic Giewont. For many tourists, Giewont is only seen from Zakopane, so from this side, from a completely new perspective, it might surprise you – it’s a very different view of this iconic peak.
Chuda Pass – Ciemniak on the Horizon
After passing through a few interesting sections, we reach Chuda Pass, where the trail meets the green-marked path from Tomanowa Valley. At this point, we can take a deep breath, as only 45 minutes of hiking remain to reach Ciemniak. The path along Twardy Grzbiet is a real pleasure – it’s wide, well-trodden, and the views are breathtaking. To the side, we can see the limestone cliffs of Krzesanica, and in the distance, the distinctive peaks of Małołączniak.
At Ciemniak – A Spectacular Panorama
After nearly four hours of hiking, we reach the summit of Ciemniak. And here, it’s worth emphasizing that the view that unfolds before us is truly exceptional. We can see Krzesanica, Małołączniak, and a portion of the High Tatras – from Świnica to Krywań. For panoramic lovers, this is a treat, as we get a view of both the Western Tatras and a distant horizon that features the Roháče and Wołowiec.
