Crossing the Red Saddle to the Starolesna Valley

The Red Saddle (Slovak: Priečne sedlo) is a narrow rocky pass located between the Small Ice Peak and the Intermediate Ridge. The trail to the Red Saddle from the direction of the Five Spisian Lakes Valley is the most exposed path in the Slovak High Tatras.

The Trail – Czerwona Ławka Pass

The trail through Czerwona Ławka is a real mountain adventure, full of emotions and challenges. You will feel like a hero as you climb to the highest point of the entire route – Czerwona Ławka, which rises to an elevation of 2352 meters above sea level. It is a narrow, rocky pass, offering incredible views of Dolina Staroleśna and the surrounding peaks.

The trail is one-way, meaning it can only be traversed from Dolina Pięciu Stawów Spiskich toward Dolina Staroleśna, ensuring safety on the narrow and exposed sections.

Who is this trail for?

This is a proposal for experienced hikers who are not afraid of heights and have no fear of exposed places. Czerwona Ławka is a challenge that will give you unforgettable experiences, but remember, chains and difficult terrain are not all. In the summer season, the trail is very crowded, so expect to wait your turn at the chains.

Along the way, you will pass attractions such as the Giant Waterfall, the Sheltering Valleys, and most importantly, breathtaking views of the High Tatras. As you hike, you will see the Intermediate Ridge, majestic peaks, and the often stunning waters of Dolina Pięciu Stawów Spiskich.

Czerwona Ławka is also the Tatra version of “Zawrat”, a narrow, steep, and challenging pass, often compared to Poland’s other mountain trails. It is a place that will stay in your memory for a lifetime!

What to Avoid

If you don’t feel comfortable in exposed places, Czerwona Ławka is not for you. The trail is not suitable for those afraid of heights or with poor fitness. Passing through the chains requires not only good physical condition but also courage.

Ending in Dolina Staroleśna

After crossing Czerwona Ławka, you will descend into Dolina Staroleśna, where you will enjoy picturesque hikes among rocky cliffs, meadows, and ponds. The trail ends at the Zbójnickie Hut – a beautifully located shelter, perfect for a rest after a long hike.
